Meeting a local artist can bring another dimension to a visit to Hanoi. This introduction to musician Pham Chi Khanh offers a glimpse into the craft and performance of traditional Vietnamese music.

Working from a small home and instrument shop in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, Pham Chi Khanh has devoted much of his life to the musical traditions of Vietnam, both as a performer and an instrument maker.

Originally from Duy Tien in Ha Nam, he grew up around traditional stringed instruments. He began learning to play and make instruments as a child, later developing a repertoire that included the dan bau and the Vietnamese long zither.

The experience described here combines a visit to his home and workshop with a family meal and music. A performance may include his daughter, who is also a musician. Hosts, timing and the exact programme should be confirmed when arranging a visit.
