Get to know the Ancient Town
01Historic houses and quiet lanes
Hoi An's former trading port preserves influences from several merchant communities. A guided walk helps connect its houses, assembly halls and bridges with their stories. Choose the buildings you would most like to enter; a walk through the streets does not automatically include admission to historic interiors.
02Visit at different times of day
Explore in the morning for architecture and orientation, then return in the evening for the atmosphere and dinner. Leave the afternoon unhurried. Staying in or near Hoi An makes this easier than fitting everything into a short visit before a long drive back.
03Add a taste of local life
A cooking class or guided food walk complements the historic sights. Check whether the market visit, transfers, drinks and meal are included. If you prefer tasting to cooking, a relaxed meal with explanations of the dishes can be just as rewarding.
Choose the right place to stay
Stay near the Ancient Town if you would like to walk to dinner and return easily to your hotel during the day. The greener countryside offers a quieter setting, with transfers to plan. For a beach-focused stay, prioritise actual beach access and the surrounding area over the distance to the old town on a map.
Three nights is a useful starting point for two full days. Add time if you want beach days, cooking and further excursions. Families may prefer a hotel with space to relax; a small central property is not necessarily the best fit for every age.
Combine Hoi An with Da Nang and Hue
Most visitors flying to Hoi An arrive at Da Nang Airport. Include the onward transfer to your hotel in your plans. Flying into Da Nang does not automatically include sightseeing there, so check the itinerary if you would like to explore the city.
The journey to Hue can become a scenic travel day, with stops agreed in advance and time left to settle into your hotel. Avoid trying to fit the entire surrounding region into the same day as a full Ancient Town visit.
Plan around the season and the heat
Central Vietnam's coast varies with the season. Heavy rain and flooding can affect access and sightseeing in Hoi An, and flooding is also a conservation challenge for the historic town. Check local conditions before confirming weather-dependent activities.
In hot weather, start walks early and allow a longer break. A food experience can be an alternative on a wet day if the venue is accessible. During flooding, ask your hotel or guide to confirm safe access before travelling.
Tickets, tailoring and free time
Check which historic buildings and admission fees are included in your walk. A general stroll and a tour with several interior visits differ in both time and cost. Keep the evening relaxed by choosing between a food experience, shopping or a performance rather than scheduling all three.
For made-to-measure clothing, agree the fabric, price, measurements and fittings clearly. Allow time for adjustments, keep collection receipts and leave room in your luggage. Your final fitting should not put an airport transfer under pressure.

Questions about Hoi An
Should I stay in Da Nang or Hoi An?
Hoi An is the natural choice if you want frequent evenings in the Ancient Town. Da Nang may suit a stronger focus on city life, the coast and transport connections. Choose according to your main interests.
Does every Hoi An tour include a beach day?
No. Check the itinerary for your hotel location, free time and any beach extension. A stop in Hoi An alone does not guarantee time at the beach.
