Three ways to get to know Bangkok
01Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Pho
These historic and religious sites are among Bangkok’s best-known sights. Choose a guided visit that gives you time to understand what you are seeing and ask questions. Check admission, dress requirements and which areas are open with the relevant operators; a city tour does not necessarily include entry to every building.
02Wat Arun and life along the river
A visit across the river works well with time in Bangkok’s historic centre. Allow for the crossing or your arranged transport. We suggest choosing a few places that fit naturally together, rather than squeezing temples, large shopping centres and a distant market into one morning.
03Yaowarat and an evening of local food
Yaowarat reveals a different side of Bangkok from the grand temple complexes. Choose a manageable food walk with suitable portions and somewhere to sit along the way. Chatuchak Weekend Market is a separate shopping experience: plan it around the day of your visit rather than assuming every market follows the same schedule.
Choosing the right hotel location
A hotel near the historic riverside suits temple visits and old-town walks. Other neighbourhoods may work better for shopping or exploring modern Bangkok. Look at the actual journey to the places you most want to visit: a spot that looks central on a map can still mean several lengthy transfers.
Three nights is a useful starting point, allowing an arrival day and two days to explore. After a long-haul flight, your first day need not be the busiest. Check early check-in, the location of your room and the final walk from your transport to the hotel.
Check the airport for every connection
Bangkok’s two airports, Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK), are separate locations. Check the airport code for each flight. Changing airports involves a road transfer, not simply walking to another gate; you may also need time for immigration, baggage collection and another check-in.
When continuing north or to an island, check whether your flights are on one ticket or booked separately. On departure day, avoid fitting a full city tour before a tight airport transfer. Our guide to getting to Thailand explains the questions to consider before booking your connections.
Plan a comfortable pace in the heat
In Bangkok, the shape of your day matters as much as the month you travel. Start longer outdoor visits early and leave time for a break around midday. An indoor alternative is useful on rainy days, ideally near your hotel or the rest of your planned route.
The best time for Bangkok is not necessarily the best time for every Thai island. For a combined trip, consider each region separately. Our Thailand weather guide helps with that choice, while the latest forecast will help you plan individual outings.
A few practical details for your visit
For religious sites, bring clothing that meets local requirements and shoes you can easily remove when asked. For guided visits, check the walking distance and number of steps. The chance to return to your hotel for a break can be more valuable than adding another stop.
Before a journey, agree on the destination and fare or how the fare will be calculated. For food experiences, tell your guide about allergies and dietary needs, including ingredients in sauces and pastes. Allow for drinks, entry fees not included in your tour, short local journeys and shopping in your personal budget.

Questions about Bangkok
Can I visit Bangkok during a long stopover?
It depends on immigration, baggage, your airport and the time available. A city visit requires different planning from staying in transit. Confirm the full connection before booking a fixed-time city tour.
