In 2024, Vietnam’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism added the craft of making Hanoi phở to the national intangible cultural heritage list under Decision 2328/QD-BVHTTDL.

The recognition highlighted the skills and traditions behind a dish served in hundreds of eateries across the capital.

Over time, the dish became part of daily life in Hanoi . Broth-making, noodle preparation and the balance of meat, herbs and seasoning are skills passed between generations of cooks.

The heritage listing also created opportunities to document and share Hanoi ’s phở traditions, helping visitors understand the food beyond the bowl.
