Thailand’s islands offer very different holidays: lively beach towns, quiet bays, diving trips and time to unwind. Picture a hammock between palms, sea views over lunch and a few unhurried days by the water. These seven islands are a useful starting point for choosing the atmosphere and activities that suit your trip.
Koh Samui
Koh Samui combines sandy beaches with a wide choice of places to stay, from small hotels to luxury resorts. Its range of restaurants, spas and accommodation makes it a flexible option for a beach break.

Couples can look for a quieter resort or private villa, while families may prefer a hotel with a pool and easy beach access. Choose your area as carefully as your hotel: some beaches have a much livelier evening scene than others.
Yoga sessions and spa treatments are part of the island’s appeal, with plenty of scope to keep your days relaxed rather than fill them with excursions.
Phuket Island
Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and one of its best-known beach destinations. Busy resort areas sit alongside quieter bays, with a broad choice of restaurants and accommodation.

Its beaches vary in atmosphere. Some are lined with large resorts and beach bars; smaller Kata Noi offers a different setting from the busier stretches. Think about the pace you want before choosing where to stay.
Koh Tao
Koh Tao is a popular base for scuba diving, with sheltered coves, waterfront restaurants and many dive schools. Beginners can explore supervised introductory experiences or work towards an Open Water qualification with a qualified instructor.

Certified divers can discuss guided dives and further training with a local dive centre. Choose activities that match your experience and the conditions. Away from the dive boats, there is time for a meal by the sea and a slower island evening.
Koh Pha Ngan
Koh Phangan lies in the Gulf of Thailand between Koh Samui and Koh Tao. It is known for the Full Moon Party, but its appeal also includes beaches, boat trips and quieter coastal corners.

If nightlife is your priority, check event dates before booking. If you prefer a peaceful stay, choose accommodation away from the main party areas. The same island can feel very different depending on where and when you visit.
Koh Lanta
Koh Lanta is an island group, with Koh Lanta Yai the main base for most visitors. Long beaches and a more relaxed atmosphere make it appealing for travellers who want an unhurried coastal stay.

Combine beach time with diving excursions, a massage or a kayak trip through mangroves. Sea conditions vary, so follow local guidance and beach warnings rather than assuming every bay is suitable for swimming.
Koh Chang
Koh Chang has a mountainous, forested interior and a different feel from Thailand’s larger resort centres. Its national-park landscapes, beaches and walking opportunities suit travellers who enjoy combining the coast with time outdoors.
Beyond the main west-coast resort areas, smaller beaches such as Hat Sai Noi and fishing villages offer more places to explore. Leave enough time to enjoy the island instead of treating it only as a stop between destinations.

Around Klong Prao, look for local restaurants and opportunities to learn about Thai cooking. Menus, classes and opening times can change, so check arrangements locally.
Koh Phi Phi
The Phi Phi Islands are a popular choice for a sociable beach trip, with boat excursions, snorkelling and diving among the main activities. They can be combined with Phuket, though boat schedules and sea conditions affect travel plans.

Spend your days exploring the coast or joining a suitable excursion, then enjoy a meal or the beach-bar scene in the evening. Choose your accommodation with noise and the local atmosphere in mind, especially if you prefer an early night.
