What kind of island holiday suits you?
01Phuket: choose your beach area carefully
Phuket is a large island with varied beaches and a historic town to explore. The Tourism Authority of Thailand highlights places including Kata, Karon, Kamala, Rawai and Mai Khao. Compare the location of your hotel, local journeys and the atmosphere you want, rather than assuming the whole island is either quiet or lively.
02Ko Samui: varied beaches and local excursions
Ko Samui also has distinct beach areas, including Chaweng, Lamai and Bo Phut. Excursions beyond your base are an optional part of the experience. Choose somewhere your group will enjoy staying; you do not need a new boat trip every day to have a rewarding island holiday.
03Ko Lanta and other Andaman islands
Ko Lanta and the Phi Phi islands are part of the wider island region around Krabi. Plan your stay around the actual connection to your hotel. A day trip and several nights on the same island offer different experiences, so compare how much time you will really have there.
One island or island hopping?
For four to seven nights, we suggest starting with one well-chosen base. That leaves several full holiday days after arrival and before departure. Two islands can work if they offer noticeably different experiences and are well connected. Moving simply for another famous photograph can mean trading relaxation for packing and waiting.
Decide how important nearby restaurants, peace and quiet, a pool, beach access and easy mobility are to you. For remote hotels, check meal options and evening transport. A wonderful hotel may still be the wrong choice if you want independent evenings out.
The last part of the journey matters
Some island stays begin with a flight close to your hotel; others need a longer road journey and ferry crossing. Confirm every stage, including baggage arrangements and the departure pier. A shared destination name on tickets does not mean the airport, harbour and hotel are close together.
Confirm your return arrangements carefully. Boat services and excursions may change in poor weather, so leave a suitable buffer before your international flight. Avoid relying on a connection that only works if every journey takes its minimum scheduled time.
Match your island to your travel dates
General advice about Thailand is not enough to choose an island. Compare the Andaman Sea and Gulf for your travel dates and planned activities. A holiday mainly focused on swimming calls for different priorities from a trip combining towns, food and a few beach days.
For weather-dependent excursions, check the arrangements for operating or cancelling the trip. Clear snorkelling water, calm seas and a particular sunset cannot be guaranteed. A comfortable hotel and enjoyable alternatives make your holiday less dependent on one activity.
Choose an island that works for everyone
When travelling with children or someone with limited mobility, check pier access, luggage handling, boat type and the final approach to your accommodation. For sports activities, confirm the requirements and suitable insurance cover. A general island holiday description will not answer all these questions.
Allow for meals not included, private journeys, entry fees and extra boat trips. Ask which restaurants or shops you can reach without a long transfer. A longer island stay needs more practical planning than a visit of a few hours.
Your time here
An idea for your stay
Use this as inspiration rather than a fixed package. Adapt the order and pace to your arrival time, the weather and your interests. Check the individual itinerary to see which services a tour includes.
- The first two days
- Arrive, unwind and get to know the beach and nearby area.
- One chosen excursion
- Enjoy a boat trip, a food experience or an island tour, depending on your interests.
- More time to relax
- Settle into your stay. Add a second island only if the connection and number of nights make it worthwhile.
- Heading home
- Plan your return journey and airport connection with a suitable allowance for weather.

Questions about Thailand’s Islands
Which island is best for families?
There is no single answer for every age group. Compare transfer times, suitable beach access, room arrangements, food and activities. An easy journey often matters more than choosing the best-known island.
Do all tours that visit Krabi include an island stay?
No. Krabi can be a mainland base or part of a regional journey without nights on an island. The tours shown here include a specific island stop. Open each itinerary to see whether that means an excursion or an overnight stay.
