Which side of the north would you like to explore?
01Chiang Mai and its temple heritage
The region brings Lanna heritage together with a lively modern city. Choose a thoughtfully paced temple visit and leave time to explore independently. Wat Chedi Luang is pictured on this page; add other sights because they interest you, rather than simply to complete a long list.
02Doi Suthep or a full day in nature
Doi Suthep and Doi Inthanon offer different kinds of excursion. A mountain temple visit is not the same as a full day on nature trails. Ask about transfers, elevation, walking distances and steps. Combining distant mountain sights can turn a gentle outing into a long day on the road.
03Food, crafts and neighbourhood discoveries
Thapae Walking Street, Nimmanhaemin and local food experiences reveal other sides of Chiang Mai. A cooking class with explanations or a well-chosen craft visit can be a welcome alternative to another temple. Confirm opening times for your travel day and whether a workshop visit includes seeing the craft being made or mainly shopping.
One base or a journey through the region?
For a first visit, we suggest several nights in one base with selected day trips. This leaves room for free time and alternatives if conditions change. If you would like to add another city or mountain town, allow extra nights rather than relying on longer daily transfers.
Decide whether you prefer a convenient city location or a quieter setting outside town. For rural accommodation, check meal options and evening transport. A countryside lodge may be less suitable if your main interests require a long return journey every day.
Choose connections that fit your itinerary
Compare arrival options once you know the order of your trip. A route through Bangkok may need different connections from a journey continuing to the coast. Check services for your actual travel dates; a popular route does not guarantee a particular flight schedule.
For road journeys, consider the full travel time with breaks, not just the distance. Let us know if you would like to limit winding roads or have a free day after arrival. An active nature excursion can be rewarding, but it should be a deliberate choice within your cultural trip.
Consider both weather and air quality
Before mountain trips or nature walks, check current air quality as well as temperature and rainfall. A long hike calls for a different decision from a short city visit. If you are sensitive to poor air quality, discuss suitable routes and activity levels with a qualified professional before travelling.
Bring extra layers for higher or cooler areas and have an alternative that avoids prolonged outdoor activity if conditions are unsuitable. Our Thailand weather guide offers regional context, but you will still need to check conditions for your chosen excursion.
Choose nature and wildlife experiences thoughtfully
For walks, ask about duration, terrain and options for returning early. For animal experiences, check what actually takes place: riding, performances, bathing and direct contact are different from watching at a distance. An appealing name alone does not explain how an experience is run.
For cooking and craft activities, check group size, what is included and whether the programme can be adapted. During village visits, ask permission before taking photographs and respect local wishes. Time to listen and understand matters more than the number of homes visited.

Are all northern Thailand tours hiking trips?
No. You can also focus on culture, food and relaxed city visits. The tours below include stops in the region; check each itinerary for its particular activities and walking requirements.
