Three different ways to enjoy the coast
01Krabi and Ao Nang as a base
Ao Nang is a departure point for boats to nearby islands and beaches, including the Railay and Phra Nang area. Staying in one place and taking day trips saves repeated packing. Ask your hotel which places are easy to reach in the evening and which activities require an extra boat journey.
02Phuket and the right beach for you
Phuket has a wide variety of beach areas, as well as urban and cultural sights. Choose your location by its atmosphere and the level of peace you want, rather than by the island name alone. A drive around several beaches can be interesting, but leave time to enjoy the beach near your own hotel too.
03The Gulf coast as a separate option
Ko Samui and other Gulf destinations require different planning from Krabi or Phuket. Crossing between the two coasts should have a clear purpose and enough time set aside for the journey. On a shorter trip, one well-chosen coastal region is often more relaxing than trying to include every familiar name.
How many places fit comfortably into a week?
For around a week on the coast, we suggest one base or, at most, a carefully chosen combination of two. Each additional island means checking out, travelling by road and boat, and settling in again. Three nights in a place can leave fewer full days to enjoy it than you might expect.
When comparing hotels, ask about nearby restaurants, beach access and what will work for your travelling companions. With children, heavy luggage or limited mobility, an easy arrival may matter more than a remote setting. Free time is an important part of a relaxing coastal stay.
Plan the whole journey to your hotel
First, choose an airport that suits your coast. Then make sure the road journey, any boat crossing and the final hotel transfer fit together. A late flight arrival does not mean every island will still be reachable. If you book these parts separately, ask the operators to confirm the connections.
On the way home, leave a sensible buffer between weather-dependent boat journeys and a long-haul flight. Consider whether a final night on the mainland would make the journey easier. Confirm timetables and operating conditions for your actual booking rather than relying on a general destination guide.
Choose the coast to suit your travel dates
The Andaman and Gulf coasts can have different seasonal conditions. Share your travel dates first, then choose suitable destinations. Even a lovely hotel cannot remove the effect of rough seas or an exposed boat crossing.
Follow local warning flags and reconfirm excursions shortly before departure. For a stay of several beach days, choose a hotel you will enjoy without needing a boat trip every day. Clear arrangements for cancellations or changes help keep expectations realistic.
Small details that make coastal trips easier
When comparing excursions, look at the boat type, group size, entrance fees, meals and collection arrangements. A trip listing many islands may involve a lot of time travelling between them. Ask how much time you will have at each place and whether you can opt out of particular activities.
Protect documents and electronics from water. For families, check that life jackets, shade, boarding arrangements and the length of the outing suit everyone. Include extra meals, drinks and private transfers in your budget; these can make a remote stay more expensive than its room rate suggests.

An idea for your stay
Use this as inspiration rather than a fixed package. Adapt the order and pace to your arrival time, the weather and your interests. Check the individual itinerary to see which services a tour includes.
- Settling in
- Complete your transfer and enjoy a first relaxed day by the coast.
- One excursion day
- Choose a confirmed boat outing or an activity on land.
- Free days
- Enjoy the beach and nearby area without repeatedly moving hotels.
- A second base, if it adds something
- Include another island or coast only when you have enough nights and a convenient connection.

Questions about Southern Thailand
Is Railay an island?
Railay is a coastal destination in the Krabi area. This guide treats it as part of the coast rather than an island stay. When comparing trips, check how you will arrive and where you will spend the night.
Why is Koh Chang not included in this regional selection?
Our Southern Thailand guide and our Thailand islands guide cover different areas. The islands guide has a wider selection, so it is a useful place to compare beach destinations beyond the south.
