Three ways to enjoy the island
01Choose a beach you will enjoy staying on
A famous beach such as Sao Beach is not automatically the best hotel location for every visitor. Ask about direct access, surroundings, swimming conditions and alternatives. A well-chosen base can be more relaxing than travelling to a different coast each day.
02Duong Dong and local products
A market visit and a meal around Duong Dong offer a change from resort life. Pepper growing and fish-sauce production are other possible themes. Check whether a stop includes a proper visit and explanation or simply a shop.
03An island excursion or a leisure attraction
Boat trips to smaller islands and activities around Hon Thom offer a different kind of day from relaxing on the beach. Confirm the full journey, included services and time needed. Leave some days free if rest is the main purpose of your stay.
Where to stay and how long to allow
Three to five nights is a useful starting point for a relaxing extension. Arrival and departure can use much of a short stay, so check how many full days you will have. One well-chosen base is often more restful than several resort changes.
Consider whether you want to eat out independently or use the resort's facilities. Compare room location, beach access, pool, restaurants and transport costs. A secluded property can be wonderfully quiet, but needs different planning from a hotel near a lively town.
Flying and taking a ferry are different journeys
Phu Quoc can be reached by air and by confirmed ferry services from the mainland, including routes associated with Ha Tien and Rach Gia. Choose the connection according to your dates, timetable, weather and overall route.
When combining the island with the Mekong Delta, plan the road journey, boat and hotel transfer as one sequence. Leave a margin before an international onward flight. Compare the full cost, including transfers, baggage and any extra overnight stay.
Consider the season before the hotel
November to April is often a drier period, while wetter months can affect the sea and boat excursions. Conditions differ between coasts and days. A date that works well for city sightseeing may not be ideal for a stay centred on daily swimming.
Discuss how important beach time and boating are to you. With fixed dates, another beach destination may fit the wider itinerary better. Follow local warnings and operator decisions if conditions are unsuitable.
Understand the full cost and comfort
Budget for meals, drinks, transfers and optional excursions as well as the room. Check breakfast, cancellation terms and any special-request charges. Families may find room layout, bedding and short walking distances more useful than a higher star rating.
For boat trips, confirm boarding arrangements, bags and suitable life jackets. Share dietary needs and leave genuinely free time in the schedule. Confirm pick-up and onward connections before your final island evening.
Your time here
An idea for your stay
Use this as inspiration rather than a fixed package. Adapt the order and pace to your arrival time, the weather and your interests. Check the individual itinerary to see which services a tour includes.
- Day 1
- Arrive and get to know your hotel and beach access.
- Day 2
- Enjoy a full free day, with a short activity only if you wish.
- Day 3
- Choose a market visit, a local-production experience or a confirmed excursion.
- Extra nights
- Settle into the slower pace and leave room to relax before departure.

Questions about Phu Quoc
Are three nights enough for a beach break?
They can suit a short finale, but check arrival and departure times. Late arrivals or early departures may leave only two full days. Extra nights give you more time to unwind.
Is Phu Quoc included in every southern Vietnam tour?
No. Look for a specific Phu Quoc stay in the itinerary. A general option to add a beach extension does not mean the island is already included.
